How the Lead Weight Calculator Works

Rolled lead sheet codes correspond to nominal sheet thicknesses and weights per square metre. The calculator multiplies the relevant weight per square metre by the selected sheet area and quantity.

Choose Code 3, Code 4, Code 5, Code 6, Code 7 or Code 8. Each lead code has a different nominal thickness and approximate weight per square metre.

2. Enter the Sheet Dimensions

The calculator estimates the weight per linear metre, the weight of each roll and the combined material weight for the selected quantity.

Important: calculator results are estimates based on nominal rolled lead sheet weights. Actual product weight may vary slightly because of manufacturing tolerances. Packaging, pallets, roll cores and handling equipment are not included.

Selecting the Correct Lead Code

Weight is only one part of the specification. Lead code selection must also reflect the type and dimensions of the detail, exposure, support, fixing arrangement and allowance for thermal movement. A heavier code should not be treated as an automatic upgrade.

Common Flashing and Roofing Codes

  • Code 3 Lead — commonly associated with concealed soakers and selected lightweight details.
  • Code 4 Lead — widely used for many conventional chimney, cover, stepped and abutment flashings.
  • Code 5 Lead — used for suitably designed heavier weatherings and more demanding details.

Understanding Width, Length and Total Sheet Area

The weight of a lead roll increases in direct proportion to its width and length. Doubling the width or length will approximately double the weight, provided the lead code remains the same.

When measuring lead for flashing, calculate the complete developed width of the detail. This may include the chase, upstand, roof cover, folds, laps and returns—not only the visible face once the lead has been dressed.

How do I calculate the weight of rolled lead sheet?

Multiply the nominal weight per square metre for the selected lead code by the sheet width in metres, the length in metres and the number of rolls. The calculator performs this calculation automatically.

Which lead code should I use for flashing?

Code 4 lead is widely used for many conventional flashing details, while Code 3 is commonly associated with concealed soakers. Code 5 and heavier codes may be used for suitably designed applications requiring thicker sheet. Final selection should reflect the dimensions, exposure, support, fixing and movement requirements of the detail.

Does the calculator include packaging and pallet weight?

No. The result estimates nominal lead material weight only. Packaging, pallets, roll cores and lifting or handling equipment must be considered separately.

Will the actual roll weight exactly match the calculation?

Not necessarily. Rolled lead sheet is manufactured within permitted tolerances, so the actual weight may differ slightly from the nominal calculated figure.

Can I calculate the weight of several lead rolls?

Yes. Enter the number of identical rolls required in the quantity field. For mixed widths, lengths or lead codes, calculate each product separately and combine the totals.
